Thrombophob ointment contains heparin sodium, an anticoagulant that helps prevent blood clots from forming and growing larger. It is available as a topical ointment for application on the skin. Thrombophob binds to antithrombin III, which inactivates thrombin and other coagulation enzymes, disrupting the clotting cascade.

How Thrombophob Ointment Works

Thrombophob ointment gets absorbed into the bloodstream through the capillaries under the skin when applied to the skin. Heparin's active ingredient binds to antithrombin III and inactivates thrombin and other clotting enzymes like Factor Xa.

This prevents fibrin from being converted into fibrin strands that form blood clots. So, it stops existing clots from getting larger and prevents new clots from developing easily. The ointment needs to be applied 2 to 4 times a day to maintain an adequate level of anticoagulation.

When Not To Use

Thrombophob ointment is contraindicated in patients with:

  • Hypersensitivity to heparin or any ingredient in the ointment
  • Severe thrombocytopenia or history of heparin-induced thrombocytopenia
  • Active hemorrhaging conditions like peptic ulcers, stroke, or gastric/intestinal bleeding

Dosage

Apply Thrombophob ointment on the affected area 2 to 4 times daily or as the doctor directs. Clean and dry the area thoroughly before application. Use a gloved finger to apply a thin layer of ointment over the entire area. Do not rub excessively or apply bandage/dressing tightly over the ointment. Follow the duration as prescribed, usually for two weeks.

Missed Dose

Try to apply the ointment at set intervals. If you miss a dosage, apply it promptly as you recall. If it is near to the next dosage, ignore the dose you missed and resume the usual application regimen.

Overdose

There have been rare cases of bleeding reported with excessive and prolonged use of heparin ointment. Seek emergency care if you experience unusual bleeding, excessive bruising, red/black stools, severe nausea/vomiting, sudden back pain, or difficulty breathing after applying Thrombophob ointment.

Warnings

Warnings For Special Population

  • Pediatric: Safety has not been established. Consult a doctor before giving it to children.
  • Geriatric: Start with a lower dose as the elderly may be more prone to bleeding.
  • Pregnancy: Only use if prescribed by a doctor, as heparin crosses the placenta.
  • Breastfeeding: Use with caution as small amounts enter breast milk.
  • Renal impairment: Use cautiously if you have kidney disorders.

General Warnings

  • Avoid applying on wounds, mucous membranes, or eyes as rapid absorption can occur.
  • Do not inject or ingest the topical heparin ointment.
  • Seek urgent care if you experience any unusual bleeding, bruising, or back pain.
  • Tell the doctor about all other medicines and supplements you take as interactions are possible.
  • Keep out of reach of children and pets when not in use.
